Cartridge, Disc, Ball or Compression: Which Is Dripping?
Every faucet in the house uses one of four internal mechanisms. Identifying it takes a minute and decides both the part and the price of a faucet repair in Racine.
Cartridge
A single stem lifts and rotates — the most common single-handle design of the last thirty years. Repair is a cartridge swap plus fresh spout O-rings. The skill is pulling one that has calcified in place without wrecking the body. Greendale's Originals often carry three generations of these, so a plumber in Greendale brings every cartridge family on the truck.
Ceramic disc
Two polished discs slide across each other. Usually the last design to start dripping; when it does, it is grit between the discs or a perished inlet seal, and the disc cartridge is replaced as a unit.
Ball
The single lever with a slotted ball and spring-loaded seats. A full kit — ball, seats, springs, cam and O-rings — is the repair. Doing half of it is why these get repaired twice.
Compression
Separate hot and cold handles that keep tightening as they close. Common in older Racine houses and on laundry and outdoor faucets. They are the rule rather than the exception on faucet repair calls in Milwaukee's older south-side homes. A washer and a reseated brass seat fixes most for a few dollars.

Why the Shutoff Under the Sink Is the Real Job
- Multi-turn stops seize. The old chrome oval-handle valves are packed with graphite-style packing that hardens over decades. Turned after fifteen years, they either will not close or start weeping at the stem.
- Quarter-turn ball stops are the upgrade. A ninety-degree lever, a solid ball, no packing to dry out. We install these whenever a stop has to come off, so the next repair takes minutes.
- Some houses have no stop at all. Supply runs straight from the branch to the faucet, so the whole house goes off to change a washer. Adding a pair during the same visit is inexpensive and permanently useful.
- Braided connectors have a service life. The cheap ones fail at the crimp while nobody is home. Any time we are under a sink, the connectors are replaced rather than reused.
If a valve under your sink is already damp, wears a crusty green ring at the nut, or has never been turned, say so when you call. It changes how we isolate the work and whether the main has to come off.

Find the Model Number Before Anyone Buys a Part
Several major manufacturers back their fixtures with a parts warranty on the working components and will often ship the replacement cartridge to the original owner at no charge. A part number saves the visit that exists only to identify one.
Look under the spout, on the underside of the escutcheon, on the sink deck behind the fixture, or on paperwork left in the vanity. Kitchen faucets often carry the number laser-etched on the base plate facing the wall. Where nothing is legible, a clear photo of the handle, spout profile and removed cartridge usually lets a supplier match it.

Weak Flow at One Faucet? Start at the Aerator
The aerator screen
Unscrews by hand. Mineral flake and pipe debris collect on the mesh; rinsed or replaced, it restores full flow on a surprising share of Racine faucet repair calls.
Pull-out hose and diverter
Kinked hoses and a diverter gummed with scale throttle the spray head. Both are replaceable without touching the faucet body.
The supply stop
A multi-turn stop that was closed for a previous repair and never fully reopened. If flow is weak on hot and cold alike at one sink, check here before blaming the fixture.
When every faucet in the house is weak, the restriction is not in a fixture. That becomes a supply-side question and is handled as pipe leak and supply repair.

Sink Drains, Pop-Ups and P-Traps
Half the calls booked as faucet work are really drain work under the same sink: a pop-up stopper that will not seal, a slip joint weeping into the vanity, or a trap arm that was never pitched. We fix those in the same visit. A leaking disposal flange found under the same sink is handled as garbage disposal repair on the same visit. Slow drains that continue past the wall are covered on the drain cleaning page.
Text a photo of the faucet and the valves under the sink. It usually settles whether this is a cartridge swap or a fixture replacement before we arrive.

A Small Job Still Deserves a Licensed Plumber
Every fixture in the house, one afternoon
Paul was quick to come out for a free estimate and gave me a truly fair deal. I did my homework and looked for additional quotes. Paul is who I'm sticking with for any future plumbing needs.— Miroslav Crnjakovic, Google review
Fixture work is where corners get cut because the job looks trivial from outside. It is also where a cross-threaded supply nut or a stop left weeping behind a cabinet turns into ruined casework two weeks later.
Paul M. Weidner and Michael J. Drea both hold Wisconsin Master Plumber licenses, and the shop is close enough to Racine that coming back is never an argument. Every page on this site leads back to PM Plumbing & Mechanical in Racine, the shop that does the work.
Fixture Visits Around Racine County
One visit covering several small fixtures beats several visits. Faucet and sink calls run through Mt Pleasant, Sturtevant and Oak Creek; well-water fixture wear is covered on the Caledonia faucet page. Before the first freeze, the guide on how to winterize outdoor faucets saves a split hose bib.

Dripping-Faucet FAQ From Racine Kitchens and Baths
Is it cheaper to repair a faucet or replace it in Racine?
Repair, almost always, when the body is sound and the part is available. A cartridge or washer is a fraction of a new fixture. Replacement makes sense when the finish is pitted, the body is cracked, or the maker no longer supports the part.
Do you carry faucet parts on the truck?
The common cartridge, disc and ball families, plus washers, seats, stops and braided connectors. Most single-handle faucet repairs in Racine are done in one visit rather than two.
Why does my faucet still drip after a new cartridge?
Usually a scored seat, a worn spout O-ring or debris left in the body. Occasionally a supply stop that was not fully reopened. It is worth a second look before buying a whole new fixture.
Can you replace the shutoff valves under the sink at the same time?
Yes, and we recommend it whenever a stop is seized or weeping. Quarter-turn stops and new connectors go in during the same faucet visit, so the next repair does not need the main shut off.
What does a faucet repair visit cost?
We quote after seeing the fixture and the valves under it, and looking is free. Simple cartridge or washer jobs are at the low end; a replacement with new stops and drain assembly is priced as one job, with the number given before work starts.
Do you install customer-supplied faucets?
Yes. We warranty the labor only, not the fixture, and it helps to have the box on site so any missing supply lines or drain parts can be spotted before the old faucet comes off.
Do you handle faucet installation near me as well as faucet repair near me?
Yes. New kitchen and bath faucets are installed with fresh stops and connectors; repairs use the cartridge families we carry.
