Silence, Hum, or Rattle: Diagnosing by Sound
Nothing at all
No sound when you flip the switch means no power reaching the motor. The overload has usually tripped and reset itself out, or the switch, the outlet, or the breaker has failed. This is the most repairable of the three and often costs nothing but a few minutes.
A hum with no rotation
Power is arriving and the motor is trying. Something is wedged between the impeller and the grind ring — a bottle cap, a fruit stone, a screw that went down with the washing-up. Leave it humming and the overload trips. Free the jam and it usually runs perfectly again.
Grinding, rattling, or a metallic screech
Either a foreign object is loose in the chamber, or the shredder plate and bearings have worn. Cutlery makes a loud, unmistakable clatter that stops the moment it is retrieved. A rising mechanical whine that has developed over months is wear, and wear ends in a leaking casing.
There is a fourth symptom that never means what people assume: water standing in the sink with the unit running normally. That is a drain problem below the disposal, not the disposal itself, and it is dealt with as a blocked kitchen line.
The Reset Button and the Hex Slot
Two features built into almost every unit resolve a large share of call-outs, and both are worth trying before anyone books a visit.
- Cut the power first, properly. Switch off at the wall and, if the unit is on its own circuit, at the breaker. Never put a hand into the chamber, even with the switch off.
- The overload reset is the small red or black button on the underside of the motor housing. If it has popped out, press it firmly back in. If it pops straight out again, something is still jammed.
- The hex slot in the center of the base takes a quarter-inch Allen key, usually supplied taped to the unit. Rocking it back and forth breaks the jam free. Turn it in both directions until the shaft spins cleanly by hand.
- Retrieve the object with tongs and a torch, then run cold water and switch on. Reset again if the overload tripped during the jam.
- Do not use a broom handle for leverage. It bends the impeller mounting and turns a free repair into a replacement, which is how a good many units we take out came to be replaced.
The Dishwasher Knockout Plug
This is the single most common installation fault we find, and it looks exactly like a broken dishwasher.
Every disposal leaves the factory with the dishwasher inlet sealed by a molded plug, so the unit can be used without one. When a dishwasher is connected to that inlet, the plug must be knocked out from inside the chamber and the fragment fished out. Miss it and the dishwasher pumps against a closed port: water backs up in the machine, the cycle fails to drain, and everyone blames the appliance.
Two related details go wrong at the same joint. The drain hose needs a high loop or an air gap so waste cannot siphon back into the dishwasher, and the hose clamp at the inlet has to be tight on the barb rather than merely pushed on. Under-sink water that appears only when the dishwasher runs is nearly always one of these three things.

The motor is the easy part. What sits beneath it is a trap arm, a dishwasher connection, and a joint into the branch line, and every one of those has a rule about slope, seal, and venting that the box the unit came in does not mention.
Fitting a unit without correcting the drain geometry underneath is why so many replacements block within months. Paul M. Chamber material is the specification worth paying for. Stainless grind components resist the corrosion that eventually perforates a galvanized chamber and lets water into the motor. Sound insulation around the housing is the other genuine upgrade, and it is the reason a better unit sounds like a fan rather than a fight.
Continuous Feed or Batch Feed
Continuous feed
The familiar type, operated from a wall switch, into which waste can be added while it runs. Faster for cooking and cleaning up, and the standard fitting in almost every kitchen in this area. Its weakness is that it will happily run with an open throat, which is how cutlery gets in.
Batch feed
Runs only when a magnetic stopper is seated in the opening, so it physically cannot operate with the throat open. It costs more, holds less at a time, and is a sensible choice in a household with small children. It also removes the need for a switch, which is useful on an island where no switch position is convenient.
What a Disposal Handles and What It Only Appears To
- Fine with cold water running — soft food scraps, small bones from poultry or fish, citrus rinds in modest quantity, and coffee grounds in small amounts.
- Fibrous waste is the enemy — celery, corn husks, artichoke, asparagus ends, and onion skins wrap the impeller rather than shredding. These belong in the bin however powerful the unit.
- Starch expands after grinding — pasta, rice, and potato peel turn into a paste in the trap that no amount of water clears.
- Fats and oils are the long game — they leave the disposal happily as warm liquid and set on the pipe wall further down, which is the single biggest cause of kitchen line blockages.
- Cold water, not hot — cold keeps fats solid so they are ground and carried away rather than melted and deposited. Run it before, during, and for twenty seconds after.
- Private septic systems need care — ground food waste increases solids loading meaningfully. On unsewered properties it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Mounting, Trap Arm, and Why a New Unit Leaks
When a freshly fitted disposal drips, the cause is almost always one of four joints, and none of them is the appliance.
The sink flange
The mounting assembly seals to the sink with plumber's putty or a gasket, then clamps up against a snap ring. Uneven tightening, or reused putty, leaves a slow weep that runs down the outside of the body and collects on the cabinet floor, looking as though the unit itself has failed.
The discharge and trap arm
The outlet elbow needs its gasket seated square, and the run to the trap needs proper fall. A replacement unit is often taller than the one it replaced, which pushes the outlet down and flattens the trap arm. Rebuilding that run to the correct slope is part of the job, and skipping it is why the drain then blocks.
The fourth is the electrical connection itself. A unit fitted with a plug needs a switched outlet inside the cabinet; a hard-wired one needs a proper connector and strain relief. Where a switch or circuit has to be added, that is electrician's work and we will say so rather than improvise.
How an Installation Visit Runs
Check what is coming out
Existing mount type, unit height, outlet position, and the condition of the drain assembly. That decides whether the new unit fits the current plumbing or the plumbing needs adjusting.
Isolate and remove
Power off at the breaker, trap dropped into a tray, old unit unclamped and lowered out. The cabinet is cleared and protected first, because everything in there stays dry that way.
Fit the mount properly
Old putty cleaned back to bare metal, flange bedded fresh, mounting ring tightened evenly. This joint is done once and done right, since reaching it later means removing everything again.
Rebuild the drain below it
Discharge elbow, trap arm at correct fall, new washers throughout, and the dishwasher inlet opened and the plug fragment retrieved if a machine is connected.
Test under load
Water run for a sustained period, a full dishwasher drain cycle where one is fitted, and a dry hand over every joint. Then you get shown the reset button and the hex slot, which is the last call-out we can save you.
