We are a four-person company in Mt Pleasant with two people on the tools. Hiring here is rare, it matters enormously when it happens, and applications are read by the owner rather than filtered by software.

The Work Itself, Not the Job Advert Version
A normal week is mixed service work: a water heater in the morning, a drain in the afternoon, a leak somebody cannot find in between, and a commercial call that has to happen before a building opens. There is no single account and no one repetitive product to install forty times a month.
Residential and commercial run side by side. On the residential side that means houses of every age across Racine County, including plenty with galvanized supply and cast iron waste still in service. On the commercial side it means plant rooms, backflow assemblies, grease interceptors, restroom groups, and buried lines with a machine in the yard.
You will speak to customers directly and explain what you are doing. That is not an extra duty bolted onto the trade here — it is half of why people call this company back, and somebody who would rather not talk to anybody will not enjoy the job.
Where You Would Be Driving
The shop is at 6008 Mt Vernon Way in Mt Pleasant and most days stay inside Racine County. Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie to the south and the southern Milwaukee County suburbs to the north are regular rather than exceptional, so a license and a willingness to drive are part of the job.
- Close in: Racine, Mt Pleasant, Sturtevant, and Caledonia make up the bulk of the calendar and are usually a short run from the shop.
- Regularly: Burlington and Waterford to the west, Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie to the south.
- Weekly enough to matter: Milwaukee, Oak Creek, Franklin, Greendale, West Allis, New Berlin, and Brookfield.
- Rarely: anything past those, and only when it is worth the drive for both sides.

Wisconsin Licensing, and Where You Might Sit on It
Plumbing is a licensed trade in Wisconsin and the ladder is not negotiable. Being clear about which rung you are on saves everybody a conversation.
Apprentice
Registered and working under supervision while accumulating hours and classroom time. This is the position where a small shop is genuinely an advantage: you see the whole trade rather than one department of it.
Journeyman
Licensed to carry out plumbing work under a Master Plumber's responsibility. This is the most common fit here, because the volume of independent service calls means you would be running your own day rather than assisting on somebody else's.
Master Plumber
Licensed to take responsibility for work and to sign it. A Master applying to a shop this size is unusual, but the conversation is worth having, particularly for anyone with commercial or inspection background.
A restricted or specialty credential — sewer and water, appliance installation, cross-connection testing — is worth putting on the application even if it is not a full plumbing license. Several of the commercial services this company offers depend on exactly that kind of certification.
What Actually Gets Someone Hired Here
You can be left at an address
The practical test at a two-plumber shop is whether you can be sent somewhere alone, work out what is wrong, do it properly, and leave the customer better informed than you found them. Everything else is secondary to that.
You say when you do not know
Guessing on a buried line or an unfamiliar assembly costs a customer real money. Ringing the owner mid-job to check something is treated as competence, not weakness, and always has been.
You leave the place clean
More of our reviews mention tidiness than mention the plumbing. Covering floors, protecting cabinets, and taking the old material away are part of the work rather than a favor done at the end of it.
You are not selling anything
There is no commission structure and no quota of upgrades to place. If a repair is the right answer you fit the repair. Anyone arriving from a sales-target environment usually finds this the biggest adjustment.
The Parts That Will Not Suit Everyone
Four honest drawbacks, listed because finding them out in month two helps nobody.
- The days are not identical. An emergency reorders the schedule and everything planned moves. If a predictable route is what you want from a job, a larger outfit will suit you better.
- Weekends carry emergency cover. Saturday and Sunday are emergency-only, and that cover is shared rather than falling on one person, but it exists and it is real.
- Some of the work is unpleasant. Crawl spaces, sewage backups, and January excavation are part of the trade here and are not delegated to a separate crew.
- It is a small company. There is no department to move into and no career ladder inside the building. What there is instead is the whole trade, quickly, and a license-holder who will actually teach it.

Expect a conversation, not a process
There is no panel and no online assessment. You will talk to the owner about what you have worked on, and if it looks promising you will be asked practical questions about jobs you have actually done.

The owner held a Wisconsin Master Plumber's license for over three decades and spent twenty-one years with the City of Racine, six of them as its plumbing inspector. He has also been the commercial plumbing inspector for the Village of Caledonia since 2014.
For an apprentice or a journeyman that is the whole argument for working here. You would be learning the code from somebody who spent years enforcing it, on jobs where the inspection is planned into the quote rather than dreaded at the end of it. Are you hiring right now?

Will you take on an apprentice with no experience?
It is considered on the person rather than the paperwork. Wisconsin apprenticeship is a registered, structured route and taking someone through it is a multi-year commitment for a shop this size, so it is not offered casually — but a genuinely interested applicant with a clean license and reliable attendance is worth talking to.
Is there overtime, and is it optional?
Some, and it is driven by emergencies rather than by a policy of long days. A burst supply does not wait until Monday. What we will not do is quietly build overtime into the normal schedule and call it flexibility.
Do I need my own tools and vehicle?
Hand tools are expected, as they are throughout the trade. Machines, cameras, and specialist equipment belong to the company. Discuss vehicle arrangements at interview rather than assuming either way — it depends on the position and how far you would be traveling.
What if I am not a plumber but want office or support work?
Send the application anyway with a note explaining what you do. Scheduling, invoicing, and customer follow-up are real jobs here and are currently held by one person. It is a smaller and rarer opening than a trade position, but it is not a category we ignore.
