- Run cold water generously, before and after. Cold keeps fat solid so it is carried in suspension rather than deposited on the way. Twenty seconds after the grinding stops is the part everybody skips.
- Shorten the pump-out interval accordingly. Where a household is on an onsite system and uses a disposal daily, having the tank checked more often than the standard advice is money well spent.
Two things a disposal never excuses: fibrous vegetable waste, which wraps the impeller rather than shredding, and starch such as pasta or potato peel, which turns to paste in the trap regardless of where it is heading afterwards.

Corrosion, not motor failure
Mineral-rich water sitting in the chamber between uses attacks a galvanized grind ring from the inside. The motor is usually fine when the unit finally leaks — the chamber has perforated.
Stainless components earn their premium
On district water the upgrade to stainless grind components is a nicety. On an untreated well it is the difference between eight years and four, which makes it the cheaper option overall.
Deposit on the splash guard
Mineral scale builds on the rubber baffle and the upper chamber where water never quite clears. It is the usual cause of a smell in a kitchen where everything drains perfectly.

The appliance is the simple part
Bolting a unit to a sink takes twenty minutes. What sits below it — the outlet elbow, the trap arm and its fall, the dishwasher connection, and the joint into the branch — is drainage work with rules about slope and seal that the box says nothing about. Replacement units are often taller than the one they replace, which flattens the trap arm unless someone rebuilds it.

If You Decide Against One

When the Problem Is the Drain Rather Than the Unit

Water backing into the other bowl
Both sides of a double sink share one outlet. When something downstream of that junction is restricted, water pushes back into whichever bowl is not in use. The disposal is working correctly and the line is not, so clearing the drain is the actual job.
Water only when the dishwasher runs
Almost always the connection rather than the appliance: a knockout plug never removed from the disposal inlet, a hose clamp that was pushed on rather than tightened, or a drain hose without the high loop that stops waste siphoning back. All three look like a broken dishwasher.
